LOCALITY OF OBSERVATION
Westside Rd old burn area on west is of road, just south of Smith Creek, Boundary County, Idaho.
HABITAT WHERE THE BIRD WAS OBSERVED
Older burn area (appox 5 years?) with standing snags and dense alder and fireweed under-growth.
SIGHTING DURATION, CONDITIONS, and EQUIPMENT USED
I observed the bird for appox three hours. Sunny day, light winds. I was wearing camouflage and carefully stalked through the alder towards the bird, only allowing my head and camera to show above the alder. The bird stayed within a 60 meter radius, calling frequently, feeding occasionally, and chasing off another bird at one point. (I could not identify the other bird.) It would stay on a specific perch for about 10-15 minutes calling frequently, and often turning on the perch at least once. It would fly to a different snag, usually about 20-30 meter away and resume calling. This occurred the entire three hours I was there. By mid-day (12:30pm) his calling became less frequent, but he remained in the same area. I quietly left the area. It one point, the bird flew onto a low perch (2 meters above the ground) about 5 meters from me. Some of these photos, and a bit of the video were taken while he was on this low perch. The rest of the time he was about 10-15 meter high.
