Bird landed in parking lot at 5:00 a.m and was caught by hand and was placed in captivity and observed for four hours before turning it over to Wayne Melquist who later released it.

Alcidae. Colors of bird suggest non breeding adult. See supplied photos.

Bird was observed “crash landing” on paved parking lot .
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?
Size, color,shape,bill,feet.Identified immediately. White patches above eyes and lack of white scapulars.
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES? WHAT WERE THEY?
Color of bird. White patches above eyes and lack of white scapulars. Similar species would be marbled murrelet.
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THIS (AND SIMILAR) SPECIES?
Observed and videod an ancient murrelet in the area years ago. See rare bird report # : 14-B-91

I have been birding for approx 50 years.

Bird was examined and released by Wayne Melquist and Carrie Hugo who are both experts in the field of birds. Wayne said the bird appeared to be in good shape when it was released.

While the written report is scant, the story is very interesting, but not unheard of with Alcids. Fortunately the excellent photos are diagnostic – hope the little guys made it back to the coast.
