River's edge
SIGHTING DURATION, CONDITIONS, and EQUIPMENT USED
3 minutes, viewed using Leopold 10 x 42 binoculars and a digital camera

Yes, during the observation
DID YOU CONSULT A FIELD GUIDE OR OTHER REFERENCE WORK?
No, not at all
DESCRIPTION OF THE BIRD(s)
16-20", Rust colored chest-neck with blue-green back and wings.
BEHAVIOR OF THE BIRD(s)
It stayed very still for the few minutes that I observed it and while I took some photos. I then went to get some fellow birders, just a few feet away, so they could observe it, but when we returned just a few minutes later, it was not visible. We looked for apx 20 minutes, but did not see it again.
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?
I was able to positively identify the bird after taking some pictures and zooming in on it closer than what my binoculars alone could do.
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES? WHAT WERE THEY?
It was smaller than a great blue heron that would be expected in this area and habitat. Plus the green & rust colors of the bird were typical of a green heron over a great blue.
WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THIS (AND SIMILAR) SPECIES?
I saw several green heron in this same location a year earlier and had returned to look for them and other shore birds.
DESCRIBE YOUR GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE
I have been birding for apx 12 years.
I am ranked in the top 20 Idaho Birders for the past 4 years.
I am fairly confident with most sightings and am still fine tuning the shorebirds and gulls.
